Out of the thousands of tiny, remote trout streams that dot our country many go overlooked , many will never see the likes of an anglers fly or spinner. Many of these small trout streams are gems just waiting to be found and fished by the like of you!
Many trout anglers are set in their ways, they follow a stocking schedule and never venture to far off the beaten path. They fish the same streams that everyone else is fishing and rarely take the time to think outside of the box. Theres nothing wrong with this type of mindset, though by limiting yourself like this you are missing out on a whole new world of trout fishing opportunity.
Lets start finding and fishing these wonderfully secluded and productive trout streams that wind through the hills and mountains of our beautiful country.
Finding that small, remote stream that is thriving with trout can be done fairly easily with some simple research. Many times these small trout streams are not really so far off the beaten path, in fact many may be just few yards off the side of a rural road. These streams are often over looked because they dont get much attention. They are not stocked and are rarely included in any local trout fishing materials and guides.
A detailed topographical map will show exactly where the smallest and most hidden trout streams are in any given area. They are in fact my favorite tool for finding these small hidden trout streams.
The best part about fishing these small hidden trout streams is the fact that they have not seen much if any fishing pressure, this leaves the door open to allot of opportunity for you as a trout angler. Just remember your not fishing stocked trout anymore, these are natural beauties, so fish for them accordingly.
Dont let the size of these streams full you either, big native trout can be caught in the smallest of natural streams. The trout stream in the picture above looks like it would never hold a population of trout, but let me assure you each small pool, cut and eddy along that stream holds trout, some damn nice ones too!
So do yourself a favor this fishing season, break away from the well beaten path! Find yourself a few of these small, but very productive well hidden gems. Chances are youll never go back to trout fishing those crowded, well stocked trout streams again!
