Fly Fishing For Trout During The Dog Days Of Summer
The dog days of summer can be a tough time for trout fishing. Water levels drop, water temperatures rise and oxygen levels begin to decline. All of this equates to one tough trout fishing situation! Though all hope is not lost, lets take a look at some fly fishing tips that will net you trout during these tough times.
Trout during the dog days of summer will seek out three major things, relief from the soaring heat, food and oxygen rich water. They can find all of this in semi-deep pools and eddies along riffles and below riffles and fast moving water. These areas provide trout with the three elements I mentioned above.
A good technique for hooking into these trout with a fly outfit is by using a sinking line tip or head casted above the pool and allowed to drift and sink into the pool will hook trout. Use a tight line drift technique with an extra long leader. The key here is keeping your fly line off of the waters surface, otherwise the streams current will move your fly out of the strike zone.
In this type of trout fishing situation the hits you get are going to be light and almost un-noticable, so using a strike indicator is a good idea. Remember we are trout fishing here, you have only one chance to hook that trophy trout, so pay close attention to whats going on. Once you’ve missed the bite its time to move on, he wont be fooled a second time!
If the above technique does not produce any trout try standing directly above the pool with a natural colored woolly bugger tied on. Drop the woolly bugger in the current and let it be taken deep within the pool.
When retrieving your bait use a SLOW, SHORT retrieve pattern! This technique works great, so if the first technique is not bagging you trout give it a honest run!
I hope this little bit of advice on Fly Fishing For Trout During The Dog Days Of Summer helps, good luck and god bless!
